Tube feeding a newborn Scottie puppy.
I realize this may seem barbaric if you are not accustomed to it -but, believe me, it saves the lives of puppies. Her mouth is tiny and Momma has large teats and this little one cannot sufficiently get attached at this point. We are constantly around the clock working toward this goal though of attaching her to the mother...
Those little bottles to nurse them as a human baby nurses do not work, the liquid gets into their lungs and it kills them. I have experienced this a couple of times and it is heartbreaking. I only have to remember that to help me be motivated to get the tube down their little throats.
Please do not use those bottles with nipples on a very young pup, the milk needs to go in directly to their stomach.
You measure the tube next to their little bodies and mark the tube at a point of their bottom rib which is approximately their stomach. Not that they enjoy this- but it actually goes down easily - this one at a day old though is strong enough to put up a fight to get it back out! This is very encouraging to me as now I know she is strong and healthy!!
Please forgive my ragged look as I have been up about 36 hours at this point and have at least saved one of Whitney's puppies.... One of them was un-revivable when born and one i am not sure, I think she may have killed it trying to stop the cord from bleeding.
